Sandrena Gel, change from Estragel
« on: October 03, 2015, 04:17:43 PM »

On advice from my meno clinic I changed from Estragel to Sandrena gel a month ago, and from 100mg Utrogestan 1-25 days to 200mg 14 days. My question is, I've had alot going on emotionally in my life lately but my reaction to it all seems extreme even for me! I haven't been able to stop crying for days. Am wondering if the change in meds is causing it.
I have noticed applying the Sanrena it is much thicker than Estragel and am wondering if its absorbing properly. Am often finding my pyjamas stick to it even after 10 minutes of drying time? Anyone help?

Cant help with the gel (though interested to know why it was suggested you switched from one to the other?). However, I do remember that when I took Utrogstan 200mg for 12 days, at the end I would have a horrible dip. I'd be so tearful and down. That's what prompted me to swap to the BCP (wasnt allowed continuous HRT as I was still having regular periods). AT what part in the cycle are you?
Really hope you feel better soon - I know it's a cliché, but do remember it's only early days x

Hi Briony,
Meno specialist thought Estragel too messy and inconvenient. Switched from 100mg Utrogestan because i was bleeding nearly every two weeks. That has settled on 100mg but I also used to have big dip after finishing progestan so am waiting warily to see as this regime continues. I asked my specialist about BCP but she didn't seem keen on the idea. Might ask again when i go back. Am on day 8 of gel only.
Are you finding the BCP helpful? What's the diffence from HRT? x

The BCP I take, called Qlaira, is unusual as it's very similar to HRT. It's bio identical and is a low dose so the only real difference is you take progesterone almost everyday and also it's a contraceptive. With conventional BCPs, the main difference is they stop you ovulating, so they replace your own hormones, rather than just topping them up as HRT does. Conventional pills have a more potent form of estrogen (which some doctors say is what's needed for younger ladies with fluctuating hormones).  Hope that makes sense? It took me a while to understand the difference. In fact, I'd always assumed HRT was stronger until I spoke to the consultant.

So it stops the hormone fluctuations, potentially? Interesting x

I would spread a little thinner and allow 15 min drying time

As the one I take is very low dose, I do still occasionally get fluctuations but overall far fewer than when I just took Evorel 50. If it's something you're considering, it's worth reading the 'pill diary' GypsyRoseLee is keeping x
