Mirena coil and patches
« on: October 01, 2015, 12:18:25 PM »

Has anyone else had a mirena coil fitted as the progesterone part of HRT and if so what are you taking/using as the Oestrogen part?  I've just had a hysteroscopy as I have been having some breakthrough bleeding and everything looked fine but the gyno doctor suggested that maybe the oestrogen I use could be decreased or changed. I use Evorel 50 patches which is as low as they go so I would need to use something else. Any suggestions please

Why not try Oestrogel - I have used it for many years and find it great because you can adjust the amount you use.  You can start with just one pump per day which is very low and increase after 4-6 weeks if you feel you need more - you can go up to 4 pumps per day but I've only ever used 2 pumps as a maximum.  I am now using just one pump per day and this is keeping most of my symptoms under control.
I used to use Oestrogel alongside the Mirena for over 4 years and found it fine - now I am 59 I have been put on Utrogestan for the progesterone as it is considered preferable for us older ladies but I've been getting some erratic bleeding which is a nuisance - the Mirena is probably your best option at the moment. Thank you Dancinggirl. I have an appointment to see my GP but it's always good to have some info on tried and tested treatment. I'm 65 and don't want to give up HRT. My gyno specialist thought Mirena was best for me as I have slight thickening iof the womb and he thought a lower dose of oestrogen might be worth a try.  I'd pretty much try any combination so long as I can keep feeling like a human being

Hi chattygal

I had Mirena and ellest (40mcg) patches and all was well until Dec when I had mirena removed. I then went on to femseven conti (50mcg) and had problems with heavy bleeding so I too have had hysteroscopy and biopsies taken. Biopsies revealed a proliferative lining ....  ???

I was advised by Gyne,  and have had, mirena fitted again to prevent over build up of lining and am due to see gp about restarting oestrogen part of hrt. I think maybe the progesterone in the patch wasn't effective/absorbed enough for me or I had a surge of my own oestrogen (I am 52)

I think I am going to ask for estradot 50 as they stick well  :)

Out of curiosity were they able to explain why you had breakthrough bleeding with mirena ? Also do you have mirena removed for hysteroscopy ?

Hi Pollie there has been no explanation as to why I had breakthrough bleeding with Mirena although I did have some polyps removed when I had my hysteroscopy. The gynae surgeon suggested a lower dose of oestrogen should be tried or even Tibolone but he said gynae surgeons do not know enough about HRT to make recommendations and said I should speak to whichever GP has knowledge of this. I took two Ibuprofen before I had the surgery and it was pretty much pain free and the Mirena was left in place.

Ahhhh that explains why my (very, young, female) Gyne  who took my biopsies had no interest in hrt whatsoever........ ::)

I agree with dancinggirl, try the oestrogen gel, I found it absorbs into the skin better and now wish I had tried it when I had the Mirena coil.
