Looking for someone who knows what I'm talking about
« on: September 07, 2015, 03:35:23 PM »

Hi I'm a newbie. So hello everyone. I'm 44 and have 3 children.
I would like to ask if everyone else has experienced this. Let me explain.

I had a miscarriage in May 2010. And afterwards was put on Cerazette.
I stopped taking Cerazette on June 15th 2015. So five years on it. It was fab no periods no problems until the last 6 months. Reason I stopped taking it was because I was getting a lot of aches pains, bad boob ache, period pain constantly, headaches forgetfulness you name it. Emotional, always feeling anxious crying every day. Just want to add that from the beginning all was fine. No periods no spotting. No nothing. No pms, no boob ache, any ache, it was great. think I was happy in myself. Hard to remember. This only started in say the last 12 months of taking it. More so towards the end.
But it's only been the last year or so they I've realised I was really moody, nothing excited me. If you told me I'd won a million pounds, I'd say make sure you spell my name correctly on the cheque. I felt down and anxious most of the time.  Leading to all sorts of insecurities with my partner. I Suffered bad period pain twice a month. Sometimes for weeks at a time. And a bout of boob ache that lasted about ten days. Bad headaches. Itchy hands and nipples. Not sleeping very well. And hair thinning and memory loss. So decided to come off it. So I Went to see the nurse. She tried to tell me I may be in early menopause. Told her I'd read hundreds of woman all saying the same thing about Cerazette But she just said to me to come off it then and come back in 3 weeks if I hadn't  improved. Then I could have a blood test. Needless to say within a week or so I started to feel a lot better. All of those symptoms I've just described have gone.

So here we are its September 7th and I've just finished my 3rd period. tHe first one came on July 20th.so just over a month of stopping the pill, Really really light. First few days was just staining. Followed by a few days of very light flow. Moderate period pain. All in all around 9/10 days. The period I had last month Was totally different. Had pain came on next day. Normal/light flow for one day, Then total flooding day and night for three days which I'd never ever experienced before. Ever!. I' always had light periods before. Anyway after the 3 days it went to moderate to light over a 24 hour period then stopped. 5 days worth. No aching boobs. No tender nipples. Just moderate to bad period pain. The period I've just finished was the same as last month. Light to flooding to hardly nothing. Lasted 6 days but quite bad pain, no boob ache. But I only had a break of 22 days since the last period.  So my questions, did anyone else experience these bad symptoms out of the blue with that pill after plain sailing. And do you think I might be starting peri menopause  ::) thank you

Welcome Kirstie. :welcomemm:

I am on the same pill and have been for many many years.  As you said to start with no problems at all throughout.  I am 49 now and had peri symptoms for the last 3 years only I didnt know what they were and just got on with it, till a couple of months back.  When I went to see GP after a range of bloods that were 'fine' so I was told, she just wanted to know about my main problem out of the large list which was the anxiety so she put me on beta blockers.  I suggested coming off the pill to see were I was, (not so keen on that idea now I read your post) but she said no need.  I am just changing GP's so not sure what is around the corner now.

It is possible you are in peri, there are other ladies of your age and younger.  Sorry cant be of more help, just thought I would reply with being on same pill, sure I have read of a couple of others here either on it or have been.

Hi and welcome to MM KirstieRose
I am certainly no expert but here is what I think may be happening:  Firstly Cerazette is a powerful synthetic progesterone and this would have kept your womb lining thin - hence no periods. This is fine as a contraceptive while you are still producing plenty of your own oestrogen but these types of progesterone can often result in PMT type symptoms - low mood, cramps, headaches etc. Many women start their peri stage of the menopause in their 40s (peri can last some years) which means the hormones, particularly oestrogen, will start to fluctuate and fall.  This is maybe why you began to experience those nasty symptoms over the last year as you weren't getting enough oestrogen to counterbalance against the Cerazette.  Now without the Cerazette your body is getting it's cycle back but again your own hormones will be fluctuating so this will result in erratic cycles, longer or shorter bleeds and the bleeds may sometimes be heavier or much lighter. Apparently in our peri stage we will actually miss the ovulation some months and this will throw things out.  Headaches are very common in peri - I had dreadful headaches, long gaps between periods and then two periods close together. I kept thinking I might be pregnant because my boobs would be so tender.
Do read up all the info on this site to get really clued up.  You may find your cycle settles for a few months and then goes haywire again - oh the joys of the peri meno stage!!!! This is a good time to really concentrate on good lifestyle choices - good diet and regular exercise etc. If meno symptoms get tough to handle or your periods actually stop over the next couple of years then HRT until your early 50s would be advisable to protect your heart and bones etc. in the long term. Oestrogen deficiency too soon can cause many problems.

KR - Have you tried just pointing your cursor at one of the headings in the green bar then clicking on one of the subjects in the drop down list? Treatments then Hormone Replacement Therapy might be a good place to try.
BTW - You ain't stupid   ;)

No I'm using my iPad. If I tap on them it just goes to another page for each of the tabs. Nothing drops down. I'll have to get my Mac out and do it that way lol  ;)

When using the iPad or iPhone - or probably any of the tablets etc.  if you go to 'site map, you can then access all the different topics including HRT treatments etc.  DG x

also another thing i would like to ask, I keep going dizzy, not every day all day just a few times a day on some days, then nothing for a day then maybe once, you get the idea. Is that just another symptom or could it be my blood pressure, Ive been trying to get an appointment to see the nurse, but they can never get me in. :-\

Hi can't offer much advice but just wanted to say I was on cerazette for approx a couple of years after I didn't get on with the mirena coil. I feel that it caused me to become very low in mood, sore boobs etc, it stopped my periods but I think that was the only good thing about it! When I stopped it took 6 weeks for me to have my first bleed, I started HRT (oestrogel, tube of testim per week and utrogestan 7 days each month ) so I don't know how my periods would have been had I not started the HRT?
I have a really tough time on the utrogestan, specialist says I'm progesterone intolerant?

Hi KirstieRose

 :welcomemm: from me too.

I agree it's a good idea to have stopped the Cezarette. For one thing - I've read that it stops ovulation. Well if it does that then you will not be producing as much oestrogen because this is produced by the ripening egg follicles. I'm not exactly sure at what point it stops ovulation, but I can imagine this having a dampening effect on emotions, mood etc, coupled with any side effects some experience from long term progestogens. It is likely you will now be ovulating hence the bleeds. Surprising not to have other signs though eg re boobs? :-\

Personally I would wait a few more cycles to see if the same pattern happens. In the late reproductive stage periods often become closer together and some hormonal changes begin to occur which can cause symptoms - even if blood tests appear "normal". You may well be heading towards peri-menopause .....
