Smells !
« on: January 28, 2016, 08:38:14 PM »

Hi everyone totally unrelated to meno in any way shape or form but as we have a wealth of knowledge on here.....

How can I get rid of an old, musty wood smell in/on my old pine wardrobes before they go into the new house and smells it out ?  ::)
DH just says dont worry the stench of paint will sort it out ! Helpful not  >:(

Were the wardrobes stripped B4 or after you owned them?  If so maybe the stripping paint leaves a smell?

Have you tried putting moth balls in ……. washing with a dilute mix of baking powder ……… standing doors open to dry out?  Maybe ask a carpenter to source what the smell might be ……….

I wouldn't move them because you'll always smell it even if it's cleaned  ::).  Have you checked that they will go up the stairs in your cottage and even fit ?

Before we had them ,its more like an old, unused smell .
Yes the stairs are big ,its a normal house not a cottage.  ;)

Time. That's what shifts it. We stripped a dresser 27 yrs ago and it still smells musty inside. You could rub them down with Lavender scented beeswax polish. I've used that and it is lovely and does nourish the wood too.

You could try washing them down with a solution of bicarb - leave them open to dry out thoroughly afterwards.  And see if you can get hold of some natural untreated cedar planks - line the floor of the wardrobe with them.  There's a reason old clothes storage trunks were made from, or lined with, cedar - it smells lovely and is a natural moth repellent.

Try wiping down with a damp cloth wrung out in vinegar and water.  When it's dry, finish off with a furniture balm.

Love it!  "Menopause Removals" - only problem is, you'd get loads of women contacting you thinking you could remove their menopause!
