Emergency anxiety medications
« on: August 30, 2015, 05:23:23 PM »

Several of you have asked recently what my GP has prescribed for my acute anxiety.  Of course, being meno-brained, I keep forgetting  ::)

In the 1990s my GP suggested Valium on an 'as necessary' basis which worked well for years.  I took it the evening prior to an event and sometimes on the morning of: which got me through many family meetings  ::) - even if I did feel hung over and even when I fell asleep in the afternoons.  I remember his Mother saying 'did you have an early start this morning?' on several occasions, eventually I told her that my GP had told me 'to sleep when ever possible'.  I know it appeared rude but at least her DS was present!

After a few years I had a couple of weird reactions and didn't dare use it again.

In 2000 he suggested a BetaBlocka to take at night to prevent early morning surges.  I take 40mg at night plus 5mg of AD night and morning.  A few years ago anxiety took over and I had to go to the GP to stay safe …… she prescribed Lorazepam 1mg 'as necessary'.

Anxiety floors me.  Within moments I am curled into a ball wanting to die.  DH stands over me with the Lorazepam tablet  ::) which either sends me to sleep within minutes or enables me.

Thanks CLKD, is Lorazepam similar to Diazepam or something completely different?

Has the same effect.  You would need to ask a Pharmacist.

It's a benzodiazepine so in the same family as diazepam. It's stronger though and longer lasting.

Fine to take on a very occasional basis but hugely addictive.

It's one that you have to be very very careful with. Not surprised it makes you sleepy CLKD. I am surprised your GP keeps giving it to you. It's difficult to get them to give you anything let alone that.

As long as you are very aware of what you are taking....has your GP not suggested diazepam, it's addictive too but no where near as strong.

Thankfully I don't have to take many Honeybun.  I had 25 prescribed 18 months ago, I've swallowed 5 so far  ;)

I would never take Valium again, it made me feel really strange  :-\

I can add Ativan to the mix many years ago and Tramadol  ::) - Ativan is given as a pre-med.

Just helps to know you have the option.

That's how I am with my diazepam ....if it's there I'm fine  ::)

Best way to be really.

Actually lorazepam or ativan has a much shorter life than diazepam! I find it perfect for any desperate times. To be honest I only use it for flying now but it really really helped me on a few occasions when I was suffering with bad panic attacks! I was prescribed 30 a month but only ever filled one prescription and used about 7 times in a year - just knowing you have them really helps though ....
