They are all supposed to arrive tomorrow.
Hope they get a lot done

Ladies, it's been dry this week WHY couldn't they just get more done?

BTW the roofer took OH aside on Monday and requested bit of an advance. 
OH agreed given that the insulation and membrane had been fitted.
Strange to relate, no invoice has arrived as yet and we don't carry that much cash on our persons usually..........

Always wary of any workmen who ask for advance.  Hope all is above board Limpy.

Phased payments are common for a big job especially if the firm doing it is small.

When we had our loft conversion done we paid as and when it was required and then the final payment at the end of the job.

They are a small firm.
So, OH was happy about an interim payment.
The thing is would be good to have an invoice before we give them a cheque.
Or, if they want cash we'll need to know exactly how much so we can get it from the bank on Friday.
Be interesting to see if anybody turns up tomorrow........

I've paid  deposits up front before a job started, then paid at final invoice.  However, I think you're maybe right about small firms. My hairdresser has had workmen in plastering his flat & they turned up one morning asking for cash for more materials & he refused point blank.  We had our fence painted recently. We bought the paint so they only invoiced for labour after we were satisfied.

Hope they turn up Limpy.

The builder doing your 'job' should issue you with an Invoice - ours buys the materials and gives us a copy of the Invoice as we 'go along'  as he needs to keep a petty cash flow going.  It is up to the tradesman whether he tells the Tax Man of any case in hand ;-) not the responsibility of the householder.

A jobbing builder will have several jobs 'on the go' so although the weather might seem suitable to the client, if he is promised elsewhere

Ladies the place is swarming with workmen.
Builders (rendering) turned up at 8.02
Roofers @ 9.55
Whereupon, they all had a tea break, including the roofers who'd just arrived 

There's slates on a lot of the front part of the roof, avoiding the part close to where chimneys are being rendered.

The renderer will be here tomorrow morning at 8, we expect the roofers Monday & Tuesday of next week.

Will they put tarpaulins on to keep roof safe from elements over the weekend?

Apparently the roof is watertight as it is now with the insulation boards and membrane fastened to the joists. OH feels it's probably more watertight now than it's ever been!

There's tarpaulins around the chimneys, mustn't light any fires till they are removed, hopefully that may be tomorrow. We'll see. Luckily the only wind forecast is from the east which is a sheltered direction for us.

You can ask for the Invoice.  You will need someone from the Planning Office or Buildings Dept to sign it off anyway. Tell the builder it's for the property records because if you need to sell in the future, you will need to have proper paperwork.  For everything these days

Don't think it will need to be 'signed off' as it is only replacement. And no paperwork will need to be kept for eventual sale.  The only thing to be kept is if there is a 10 year or so guarantee on the work.

   ………. most jobs on a private property these days needs a Certificate of Completion or it can hold up a future sale.  It really is best to check with the Building Dept at the local Council!  I live in an area where a LOT of extensions etc. have been added in recent years: to properties of 30 years+ age: and because a neighbour had no paper work no estate agent would touch the potential sale - it took 18 months to get it all cleared and paper work sorted!

It's only a replacement for an existing roof, it doesn't need to be "signed off"
It isn't a new roof.
