HRT not lasting 24 hours
« on: May 26, 2015, 12:57:48 PM »

Hi ladies ,

I am working my way through the HRT maze. I have now worked out after changing the times I am taking my HRT to see if that makes a difference, that my low dose HRT is wearing off before I am due to take the next tablet. Has anyone else had this problem? And if so what did you do, to rectify it? I am wondering if upping the dose would rectify this / or is the patch route the next option.

Thanks Peppermintyxx

Could you speak to a Pharmacist?

A patch may give a more controlled dose.

Thanks for replying clkd and limpy,

I just wondered whether it was a common problem . Sometimes others have experienced things like this and may have already come across an explanation or an answer. I will ask the specialist when I see her.

I was feeling groggy in the mornings and changed my time for taking the pill to the early evening and now I am exhausted by 11am, and have to lie down . So it seems to wear off after 16 to 18 hours.

I don't trust my GP or a pharmacist as neither know anything about HRT.

Might be worth asking them anyway. If they don't know you could always ask them to find out.
Or, have you thought of emailing Dr Currie?
I can't remember how much it was but she was very helpful when I emailed her about something. The other huge benefit was having a print out of her response to take to the GP, it helped so much.

How long have you been on this HRT? Usually, once your levels have been increased, you should remain steady no matter what time of the day you take it. Maybe your oestrogen level is still fairly low? It can take quite a while to increase to a level where you are stable.  I was on low dose HRT recently and even after five months I would get hot sweats if I was a day late changing my patch. My residual level must have only just been enough to keep symptoms at bay.

Hi ,

I have been on it nearly 3 months and I am feeling worse now not better. I am back to where I was before I took it. I am definitely going backwards. I am disorientated and exhausted again. I am unable to speak properly , I am so tired. My mood has also worsened , and is no longer better on the oestrogen only phase. I ache constantly also. I have no energy, I will have to start taking the pill in the morning again as at least I get 8 hours of not feeling so dreadful in the daytime.

Pharmacists have private rooms these days and know about the general range of drugs prescribed by GPs  ;) and have the time to look things up!

I started on elleste duet 1mg and after four months I noticed that I was so much worse in the mornings. I used to take my tablet at 7am and felt it kick in about 10.30am. The half life of the eostradiol is 12hours. I also have bowel issues on and off so I wasn't sure how good my absorption was day to day. Because of these issues I have switched to patches and I find that I am more consistent with control of my perimenopause symptoms. I still have a lull in the mornings but that is usually related to the amount of sleep I have had.
