Early Meno Sufferers - Can I stop my HRT??
« on: May 14, 2015, 12:32:13 PM »

Hello all,
Its been a long time since I've posted anything as things have been ‘ok' but I need some advice ( I used to SpiderGirl78 but Ive had to re-register)
I am classed as having Primary Ovarian Failure as periods stopped under 35 – I was 32 when told, 36 now and have been taking HRT since then on doctors recommendation as it helps keep heart healthy and bones strong. I am on my 4th HRT (Kliovance this time) and this has to be the worst of the lot so far – Ive about 8lbs in two months despite the fact that I am really active, workout and run 4-5 times a week and have a good diet. Im only 5ft 2 and the weight has all gone on my middle so is really noticeable to me., Im sluggish all the time and have no energy. On top of that night sweats have returned with a vengeance! I am seriously considering just stopping the HRT and looking for natural alternatives for the flushes etc and take Calcium and Vit D for my bones, like I said Im fit and have a healthy diet so heart should be ok?! Im talking to the docs this afternoon but want to know if any other early meno ladies out there are coping without the HRT? Thanks x

Hi ,

Sorry you are under Parr again.
I am not in early meno so can't help there but one of the ladies recommended the Daisy network. And also it may help looking at the thread I posted on here entitled ,' I hope this helps ', well worth a look and then you have all the information to make an informed decision.

Hi
I had ovarian failure aged 32 following hysterectomy, I went on orstrogen and have been ever since

My thoughts (and that particular GP at the time) was that I should be on it at least until the age I would've naturally gone through menopause as it has been protecting my heart and bones as well as it took away all my symptoms , I'm suffering now but I think that is due to low progesterone

It's a personal thing and I was lucky that the first tablet given to me back then worked with no side effects

Hi Feelinglost78 - I had a premature meno which started in my mid 30s.  As you are 36 I really wouldn't consider stopping HRT - you are far too young and you don't want to develop vaginal atrophy and bladder problems - I stopped HRT too early and am now suffering as a result.  There are no natural alternatives that will truly give your body what it needs.
Weight gain is not normally to do with HRT, it is usually because the meno results in weight gain so I'm afraid it's about eating less, eating well and getting lots of good exercise. I know you are doing these things but you may need to cut down your calorie intake. What other HRTs have you tried?
Have you tried Femoston? This has a kinder progesterone and you could use the sequi version, which gives a withdrawal bleed each month but might help reduce any bloating etc.
Have you tried a Mirena with separate Oestrogen as gel or patch?
Have you tried Oestrogen as gel or patch with Utrogestan (micronised progesterone) as either sequi or conti?
I am now 59 and when I came off HRT I found it much harder to keep my weight down as I was so tired all the time.   DG x

I also went through early meno, was on Oestrogel and Urogestan 100mg x 12 days per month,  since 40, they are bio identical hrt and very"user friendly."  I would strongly suggest you try the combo before stopping you are too young to be sans oestrogen, all the best though in your decision.

My Mum's friend went through an early menopause in her early 30s due to a complete hysterectomy. She declined HRT.

She was only 48 when she had a fall and completely shattered her wrist and ankle during the fall. She has had reduced mobility ever since as a result.

She has also suffered with atrial fibrillation for the last 10 years, which isn't life threatening but is often very unpleasant.

I understand that her condition is due to lack of oestrogen.

Thanks everyone.
I have had a good chat with the GP (he must be brand new because he was super-keen to help) and he is doing some research for me but has suggested the Mirena coil and a estrogen pill only...before that though he is going to do a whole swath of blood tests to make sure nothing us is underlying so thats a positive. Tests tomorrow, appointment with Dr on Thurs so ill keep you posted of what he says.
Something I am annoyed about, he mentioned a memeber of the surgery who is a 'meno and HRT specialist' what??? Why in 4 years have none of the other doctors mentioned her and why havent I been reffered to her? Im going to bring it up with the surgery manager.

Word of advice nick panay mentioned at daisy network conf pill does not protect the bones the same as hrt.  Have you tried transdermal.ie gel or patch these are his preferred choices

Feelinglost78 - I agree with lancashirelass that oestrogen in gel or patch would be better. I've used Oestrogel fro many years and find it good because you can adjust the dosage to your needs.  I had a Mirena for a few years as well and found it quite good - so I'd definitely give that a go. DG x

Has anyone mentioned Qlaira to you? I have had more success with it than I did HRT x
