Bleeding after Menopause
« on: March 23, 2015, 12:37:42 PM »

Hi everyone.
I have not had a period for at least 3 years but have occasionally had the dreaded spotting.
September 2013 I had an ultrasound that showed my lining to be 6 mm so had a biopsy and a cervical polyp removed. Biopsy thank goodness was fine. Roll on to September 2014 and I start spotting again so had scan...lining now 7 mm and a hysteroscopy which showed 2 endometrial polyps which were removed Jan 2015....they were examined and again, thank goodness all fine.
8 weeks after the procedure I have started spotting again! The consultant did tell me when I had the hysteroscopy that I am oestrogen active and joked that my womb was still young!
When I get this spotting I get boob pain and cramps like my body is trying to have a period but something is stopping it. I am fed up of all this and wondered if anyone else has experienced anything like this.
I am going to go back to my GP so I bet it will be another scan etc etc, I was wondering if maybe taking progesterone would help.
Thanks so much for listening and take care.

xx

:welcomemm:  ……. it is probably your hormones going up and down.  Have a read of the menus, top of the screen.  Make notes.  Have a browse round!

Thank you! I have had a good look around here! I think its hormonal too, never took HRT but I dont like the idea that my oestrogen levels seem to be high, maybe the gp will do a blood test to check, that would be preferable to having a biopsy!

Hi jacci48

 :welcomemm:

if your oestrogen levels are sufficiently high to cause thickening and polyps, despite being post-menopausal then it does sound a bit like a sort of period - you haven't said how old you are? Did you have normal regular periods in your fertile years or have they always been sporadic?

It sounds like you may well benefit from a dose of progesterone every now and again so that you can shed the lining properly, otherwise you could be at risk from endometrial cancer in the long term.

Maybe for example you could take utrogestan twice a year ( depending on how quickly your lining is thickening) or maybe  a little more often?

Yes I expect they will do a blood test although one test isn't very reliable on its own.

Im 54 and I havent had a proper period for at least 3 years I would say. When I did have periods they were fairly regular but very heavy and yucky and painful. I was diagnosed with fibroids in my 40's.
I know the risks of endometrial cancer and as I have had bone cancer in the past I know my body is quite capable of betraying me in that way. I detest going to the Dr as lately I seem to be going a bit too often and she is always saying, bless her, Im going to have to refer you urgently to a gynaecologist within the 2 week rule...deep joy!

Your GP is doing what is recommended.  If she thinks you need a referral then so be it particularly with your history. Do you get to see your Consultant who treated your bone cancer?

I know she is and I couldnt ask for a better GP, she is really lovely.
My bone cancer Consultant is miles away, it was such a rare form I had to go to a specialist centre.Fortunately I no longer need to have checks for that anymore.
Well  I believe it will be back to the docs for me....feel like Im living there at the moment!

So pleased that the bone cancer was dealt with!  Do you get called back for conferences at all? as a 'rare specimen'  ;)

I dont but he has asked my permission to be used on papers etc. In between 2001 and 2012 I was the only person to have the cancer type in the place it was. I was very lucky as where I had it made it extremely non aggressive. Got the final all clear on Saturday before last jumped up and down re no more hospital appts etc and then started bleeding again on the Monday....if its not one thing its another!
