What do you get 'done'?
« on: March 12, 2015, 04:32:56 PM »

Just thinking today of all the things I get done by other people that I used to do myself:

all the painting and decorating
grass cutting
pet food deliveries
shopping by Tesco
monthly manicure and gel polish
3 monthly chiropodist
yearly weedkiller for grass and scarification

Still to investigate oven cleaning but I did have an all-day clean of the house from top to bottom last year. Not sure if it was worth it though.
And what do I do with all my spare time - that's another topic!

What do you get done that you used to do yourself?

The only thing is oven cleaning but I've used someone for that for the past thirty years so can't put that down to age! Everything else we still do ourselves.

We do it ourselves too......but....we moved to a much smaller house so that we could. With our last house which was enormous with very high ceiling we needed help.

Don't even get my food shop delivered.

Oh I do get the dog washed and trimmed now as my back is not up to leaning over the bath. And I take the car to get washed at least four times a year.
Hubby used to do car repairs but he is not really up to that now ....so we have a man for that...my daughters boyfriend  ;D

Actually now you have got me thinking. Might like to get a man in to decorate my kitchen. So much less hassle than doing it ourselves ...now to convince hubby

Just painting and decorating so far - seriously considering the oven cleaning team - it's such a horrible job!  ::)

We do more or less everything - or should I say my husband does  ;D.  That includes plastering wiring plumbing building mending stuff, cars, gardening, mowing etc. However to save time and as he's getting older he sometimes gets help with the cars but usually goes along himself to help them do it! Ditto getting help to plaster a ceiling soon ( he's done the walls). If he wasn't here I would get other people to do all of this!!! I just do gardening shopping some cooking general housework maybe a bit of mending ( rarely) making the odd curtain ( rarely). I get my hair cut properly though!!!

We do everything ourselves as hubby is in building / electrical trade. For past few years we get someone to do garden, I love gardening but when daughter took unwell we to travel to hospital 2 times daily for months so neighbour took over but we felt bad and got gardener and I just can't let him go, he's an angel so pernickety and great at his job ( used to be green keeper at went worth golf club) nowitgivesme time to sit and admire lol. Up until fairly recently we've done it ourselves. Garden is all landscaped now, so no grass cutting now.

We get most of the heavy shopping delivered, but I still prefer to buy fresh stuff myself.

I'd love to get someone to do my windows as I'm rubbish at it.

Our boundary fence needs painting, but we're going to get someone to that as both of us are only capable of doing top half. Him because of his knees, me because of my back. Dread the time when we need to decorate indoors.

The Saturday breakfast!  Hubby cooks a full bacon-egg-black pud-tomato-mushroom bonanza, with toast, coffee and orange juice, while I'm out getting Dad.  We then walk through the door to the most wonderful aromas and sit down to eat.  Aaah!  (Oh yes - I set the table and clear away!)  ...............And it's a free service!   ::)

Painting ceilings (bad neck), hair dye (don't trust home dyes), bins out (hubby does as my arthritic wrist means I can't) - the list is endless!! I hate it as I'm so used to doing anything I want and was a prolific house painter but got roped into wall-mounting a 55" tv last month and woke up the next day unable to move - couldn't even turn over in bed as both my shoulders had gone, so guess it's for the best at the moment!

Anything specialist trade (plumbing, wiring, etc), but decorating in my job!  However, my arthritis is worsening so we'll have to see how long I can continue - but our daughter still lives at home, so she can labour and I can supervise!!

We are thinking about getting someone in to do our back garden as a one-off - hubby had it paved years before I met him as he suffers badly with hayfever so wanted to get rid of the grass.  However, it was done 'on the cheap' and there's no weed-suppressing membrane and only a relatively thin layer of sand under the slabs, so the weeds are prolific and impossible to get rid of (Pathclear does NOT kill weeds for 5 years - it makes them go brown for a couple of weeks, then they come back!!!).  So we are seriously considering having it redone properly - and prettier too .... daughter, dog and I would love to have a small lawn, and hubby says we can have one as long as he doesn't have to cut it!

I'm thinking of getting hubby's shirts ironed too - I HATE ironing, and it's getting harder to do with my arthritic thumb (that's my excuse anyway!).  Just need to persuade hubby that the initial cost of doubling his shirt supply will be worth it!

Otherwise, we're happy to do 'stuff' ourselves.

For me, it's more of a matter of what I would get done if we could afford it! Yep, decorating, cleaning, clearing gutters etc. What we don't get done, remains undone. Any extra money is being put aside for a trip to see my son, his wife and a new grandchild due in July. Not sure if we can manage that, but how can we not?
