Like you, I lost all confidence in my GP when I ended up in hospital because he'd put me on too high a dose of a drug to help nerve pains. (Then there was the time he lost my blood results, the way he googled everything I said to him etc etc...). Seeing other doctors in the practice didn't help as I think he had labelled me as an anxious nuisance. As I was only 40 at the time, he refused to look into my hormones.
Eventually I changed to a practice five miles away and am so overwhelmed by the difference: my new GP is kind, professional, open minded and doesn't give up. I could kick myself for not changing two years ago. What's more, every single doctor there is the same. One even called me in the evening (out of hours) simply to say she'd been researching Utrogestan to see if it would help me.
My advice to you? You need an HRT review with a doctor you trust 100%. Change to a totally different practice and have a fresh start. Do your research, like I did. I asked everyone at work and in my neighbourhood about their doctors, got a short list and then checked out the doctors' qualifications/interests (look for ones with DRCOG, FRCOG, FP/family planning certificates etc) and also ask if they have a Menopause Clinic (though mine doesn't - I think it's still quite rare in some areas). By choosing a practice where all but one of the doctors have chosen to specialise in gynaecology, I feel like I have really been understood for the first time.
Don't be put off by the bureaucracy - it was so simple to switch (just needed my NHS number and passport) and the new practice offered me an appointment the day I signed up. I could kick myself for not doing it two years ago!
Good luck xx
