Safety of long term Red Clover
« on: December 17, 2014, 03:56:41 PM »

I was wondering about the long term safety of taking Red Clover complex.  I've been taking if for about 18 months.  It doesn't get rid of hot flashes completely but does seem to reduce them.  All the info I have seen is that it is not known for sure as the companies of such products do not have to show evidence of safety but I saw on one site that you were not advised to take it if you have an oestrogen receptive-positive cancer and also warnings about blood thinning.

I was wondering whether there was any up to date info that I was unaware of.

Thanks.

You are lucky to have had relief for this long.  If 'alternative' treatments worked long term they wold be available on the NHS.  I'm sure someone will be along  ;) if not do a search and see how others have found it.

I presume you have looked at the information on this site?: http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/phytoestrogens.php
and here about safety: http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/newsitem.php?recordID=85 I would have thought if there was anything more up-to-date it would have appeared on this site?

I did find some information a while back and I meant to read it in more detail, but I can't find it now.... From what I understand it is one of the more promising of the supplements but I don't think there has been sufficient research as you say - and before a product can be licensed there would need to be long term reliable info/trials on efficacy (how effective it is) and safety.

All I could find was this review of studies into soy and red clover specifically in relation to breast cancer:

I avoid all phytoestrogens (having had ER+ breast cancer) on advice from my specialist medical team.
