Utrogestan - New Information Leaflet
« on: September 28, 2014, 10:23:12 PM »

As some of you will know, the manufacturers have ceased supplying the 200mg strength Utrogestan capsules for use in HRT.

I just opened my new pack of 100mgs and have noticed the dosage instructions inside now say to take the capsules one a day for days 15 to 26 of the cycle. There is no longer any mention of the alternative way to take it which used to be for 25 days of each month.

Does this indicate a re-think on the part of the manufacturers - perhaps that the 200mg strength is too much for HRT use?  And why no mention at all of taking it daily as a conti (no bleed) option?

Is this another case like Vagifem where the strength was reduced due to new research?

How interesting.  I wonder if there is a way we can check this with Dr.Currie to get her thoughts on this? I think many women would love to just use 100mg on a sequi basis - after all I think Prof Studd prescribes Oestrogel or patches with 7 days of  100mg Utrogestan for 7 days per month as his standard treatment??

I agree Stellajane - there are many of us in a muddle about this. If Dr Currie or any other pharmacists out there would be kind enough to clarify the dose and regime as Dancinggirl suggests I suspect it would put many minds at rest and maybe prevent a pile of avoidable trips and phonecalls to GPs.

I'd be very interested too..... I've currently got 2 packs of the 200mg Utrogestan capsules in the cupboard from my last prescription, but suspect I'll be getting the 100mg capsules next time then.

Thanks, Stellajane.  I'm seeing my GP next week so will see what she says about it as well.

Hi there

This is in haste as I am working this morning off in a minute...

I've been in touch with Dr Currie and she confirms the current view that as part of cyclical HRT Utrogestan 200 mg should be taken for 12 days per 4 week cycle. She is also contacting the manufacturer and will be updating the website accordingly as necessary in due course.

She also said that the Utrogestan 200 mg that is currently used vaginally as fertility preparation can also be taken orally. However of ocurse this means that the Patient Information leaflet (PiL) is incorrect as it referes to fertility. The correct PiL for HRT Utrogestan 200 mg can be found on the web. As we know Utrogestan is not licensed to be used vaginally in UK as part of HRT, but it is for fertility  :-\ , but is prescribed for this purpose bysome specialists if there are side effects from oral use.

As far as I can make out this means the PiL for utrogestan 100 mg is incorrect and I would be interested to see if anyone has an old leaflet from someone who has been taking it continuously for a long time to see if it is different ie says 100 mg shouldbe taken for 25 days out of 28. I agree Stellajane they need to get it sorted!

Hope this helps

Thanks for that, Hurdity.  Very helpful.  So, basically, the GP will need to prescribe twice as many Utrogestan tablets next time, ie, I've got to take 2 100g tablets on days 15-26.  Hopefully my GP will know about this, but I doubt it as she doesn't seem to prescribe it very often - I had to specifically ask for it.

Wow that was quick!  Just as we thought. No wonder everyone was confused. What I think they must have done was edited it quickly without reading it properly. Thanks for doing this Stellajane

Hi Ladies
I saw my GP yesterday and asked if I could switch to 100mg rather than 200mg as I think I feel better when on the progesterone, (time will tell!). She confirmed that the 200 dose was discontinued but did not know why. She has now prescribed me the 100 dose and said I am to take it from day 1 to 25 of my cycle, but having read this I am even more confused!!! If anyone can help I will be very great flu as I'm not sure now what I'm supposed to do?
Thanks
