Private Doctor
« on: August 08, 2014, 01:58:05 PM »

I think I have finally decided to go and see a private doctor and was considering a visit to Dr Studd/Dr Gluck just not sure what to do?  Has anyone else recently seen a private specialist they could recommend please?  I just don't know what other route to take.
Many thanks !

Have you searched on here? There's been many a topic on here where he's been mentioned.

I hope you get some responses from ladies who have experience on this.  I've heard Prof Studd can be a bit gruff - though he is deemed one of the leaders in the field on hormone treatment.  I believe there is a Dr.Panay that is supposed to be very good.
I went to The Amarant Menopause Clinic many years ago and was fully assessed and put on the best HRT combination I'd tried thus far.  Whether it is still good I don't know but if you are London based it might worth trying - it was quite expensive but going privately always is.  Amarant Centre, 80 Lambeth Way, London,  SE1 7PW    Tel 020 7401 3855

If you are not near London then you could research for a Gynae in your area - many gynaes attached to teaching hospitals around the country see patients privately - you just need to find someone who specialises in meno issues.
Keep us posted .   DG x
PS - I do think it is dreadful that you feel you need to pay to get the right treatment.

Hi ladies,
Cubagirl - good idea, just being lazy! :-\

Dancing girl - hope you are feeling better?  (re. heat, in the same boat too, yesterday I went to Kingston and felt so hot and awful, wish I had not bothered!  :-X)..

Thanks for helpful suggestions! (Will look into this)
I confess that I am at a loss to know what to do, I do think that in my case(and others no doubt) the NHS has not been helpful, it is extremely stressful having to wait 5 weeks to see a GP here in Surrey.  Plus doctors seem keen to push anti-depressants, and although I am not good at present, I am a bit of a coward when it comes to going down the AD route if that makes sense.
I am also contemplating homeopathy/medical herbalism too.

it is a minefield, the menopause is a wonderful money earner for some doctors....!
Thanks  for your support...
I hope you are managing with heat...i thought it would have cooled down just a bit...sigh!

latefortysomething - I wouldn't waste money on alternative stuff like herbs etc - I've tried the lot with absolutely no benefit.  The only thing that some women find works is acupuncture and you've got to find a good practitioner - plus it's expensive.
Your MM name implies you are still in your 40s so HRT should be your first option. ADs have their place in treating some menopause symptoms and they work well for some women but many women find they don't work for meno symptoms and they can carry some nasty side effects.
Waiting 5 weeks to see a GP is appalling  - what a terrible service you are getting.
If you can afford it, then definitely ask for a referral to a private menopause clinic or a gynae. When you do manage to see your GP, do write down all your questions and concerns - print stuff off from this site to illustrate your point etc. - this can give you confidence.
If you are in Surrey I would be very surprised if there isn't a NHS meno clinic near you - I used to live in Barnet (South Hertfordshire/North London) and there was a Meno Clinic at Edgware Hospital. Just Google Menopause CLinic for your area.  You may be able to just phone up and make an appointment - I did!!!!

Have you tried Find a Specialist above? Maybe find something there. Private meno clinic here is expensive, I refused to pay. My GP put me to a meno clinic at hospital. Only runs once a week mind you. Maybe even a gynae referral at your local hospital would be helpful. Of course you need a GP referral, add to that your 5 week wait to see your GP. Vicious circle, but push for what you need, it's your body. Different GP maybe, who is more sympathetic even.

Hi ladies,
Thanks for all your help with this much appreciated.
Good to read that you have managed to find good clinics so again thanks for information on these!  I hope you are both ok at present?

I think that accupuncture makes more sense, but it is just finding a good practitioner as you say.  Homeopathy does still interest me, must admit.   I am actually moving to Wiltshire fairly soon, just to complicate matters,  but I may have to come up to London.  Interesting to read about Dr Studd and Nick Panay, not sure if I haev mentioned this before.  I am intrigued that they don;t appear to address adrenal issues, seems they prefer to precribe bio oestrogens and progesterone.  I confess I wonder about this also.   The more I read, the more I wonder...(perhaps I should not delve too deep...alas!)  I did read about a couple of doctors who tend to treat differently, adressing adrenal and thyroid issues.  So for a fairly simple person like me, it's a minefield.

Sadly I am in my early fifties now, nearing 52 - I should change my name to earlyfiftysomething I know.  The years have flown, and i have ignored certain issues for too long, sadly they catch up with you and wallop...as I am sure you both know,  however you're both more clued up and on top of things than moi!

Thank you again, still mulling things over, I will post again and let you now where I end up and if it was successful....I pray.....really do!
LFS (approaching fifty from the wrong direction....I am counting back now... ;D)....hope no one notices!
Keep well and cool!
