Any ideas without having to go to GP? It's not too bad at the moment, but want to stop it in its tracks if I can.

My mum has a chiropodist that comes to the house. £20 for a half hour. It's really the only way to get rid of it quickly. You can do it yourself but you could make it worse and it hurts like hell and does not look good if you want to wear sandals on holiday.
Have a look at what's on offer locally but a lot of them do house calls only.

Yep,  I warded off an ingrowing toenail problem by getting a chiropodist to sort it.  She came to my home and, as far as I can recall, the cost was similar to that mentioned by honeybun.  They are specialists in this sort of thing so well worth it.  She did a good job and it's never recurred

Hi CG, you are not needing this just before going on holiday.

A while back I thought I had the beginnings of an ingrown nail on my right foot.  A chiropodist neighbour told me to pack it with small amoipunt of cotton wool at side of nail where it was dogging into skin with cotton wool and this helps to stop the nail embedding into the skin.

 Have a look online there are some sites showing you the correct way to do this.

Or try a beauty salon as for a file and paint of the toes, sometimes the nail has been cut the wrong way and this causes pain.  A good salon would be able to advise.

My sister mucked about with an ingrown toe nail for years. It kept going septic due to her prodding and cutting.
She eventually had to have the nail removed. It never grows back.

See a chiropodist, must easier and less painful in the long run. Nothing worse than sore feet.

 had one earlier this year. It was very painful at the base of my big toe nail and if i pressed the nail it hurt. At first I didn't realise it was due to an ingrowing toenail but on closer inspection, I could see a sharp edge of nail digging into the side. I bathed it every morning to soften it and tried to lift the nail away by tucking a small piece of cotton wool under the corner then after about a week when I could bear it, I got  the nail clippers and holding them at right angles to the nail I snipped downwards into the edge of the nail and then pulled off a small bit of nail. I did this over several days until all of the sharp digging in bit had been removed. What a relief it was too.

Not sure I'm happy to recommend you do the same though. I think the advice to see a chiropodist is probably better than my DIY job

I looked it up. NHS website  suggest using cotton bud soaked in olive oil & to try pushing skin back in offending area. Tried that earlier & it's helped. Followed it up with savlon healing gel. Not so sore now. Problem is nail got split about a week ago so had to chop it back to stop it catching. Sods law!

I know  that a chiropodist uses a tiny bit of chamouix (sp) leather under the nail. What does hubby wash the car with CG. A tiny clean bit of that tucked under the nail.

Sponge! Well it was today anyway. So doubt that would help. Will see how it goes. Last time ended up with oral ABs despite my protests that topical was all I needed.

Get yee to a chiropodist pronto. It's not that expensive and no anti biotics will be needed.
Too near your holidays to take chances especially in a really warm climate.

Thank for asking. Turned out to be a raggy nail. Once I'd followed instructions online for what I thought was ingrown toenail, found raggy nail. Got my special clippers out, bathed my foot applied antiseptic & all seems to be well again. No longer all red & sore. Quite relieved as didn't fancy thought of oral ABs as I have such a bother with them.
