Lights out tonight
« on: August 04, 2014, 12:31:42 PM »

Apparently we are being encouraged to switch off the electricity this evening and light candles - that's please the Fire Service - not  >:(.  As Mum said, what's the point in sitting alone in the dark  :-\

To remember those who gave so much.

There was some talk of street lights being switched off for the hour too.

Very poignant I think.

I remember lighting a candle for the children of Dunblane  :'(

The idea is to turn the lights off bar one single light, or one single candle for one hour from 10pm to 11pm - it's an act of rememberance and commemoration.  The foreign secretary at the time of war breaking out said, 'the lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our life-time.' - this quote is the inspiration for the RBL 'Lights out' event.  The time was chosen to co-incide with the time war was declared in 1914.

I see it as a focus for personal reflection - a time when the whole country has one thought (like 11am on Armistice Day), and I'll be taking part.

Pity.  :-\

I think it's very important to show respect. My bed can wait for once.

I respect the situation but I expect many people will be in bed.   I only hope that people are careful with those candles!

Think most of us can cope with a candle  ;)

I hope a huge number of people choose to stay up perhaps a little later to take part in this.
It's hugely important especially for young people to see this being done across the country.

Why?  It's not as if it was after all, the 'War to end all Wars' - England had already been through the Boer War and mucked up at Crimea …….. and 4 years later were at it again and as for the News at lunch-time  :'( - and William talks about 'reconciliation'  :(

I'll be staying up (I usually go to bed at 9.30pm as I get up at 5.30am) with my candle.  It's important to remember these occasions - even more so now they are no longer part of living memory.  Lest we forget.

I too think that it is important to show our respect and also to remember all those who are still living in a war situation. The full story is here http://www.britishlegion.org.uk/remembrance/ww1-centenary/lights-out#.U99bkdhpjpU.facebook

Just because it was not the war to end all wars does not mean we should not pay our respects to those who paid the ultimate price.

If not for them we could have been living in a very different place.

Not only do we remember WW 1 but every other war too and those who have died.

It was for the poor ------s who got killed or maimed.
The least we can do is show a bit of respect to them and their families who had to live with the aftermath.
