« on: May 27, 2014, 12:26:44 PM »

Ive had a few vertigo attacks in the last two weeks, 4 to be exact, but not sick ,had the spinning sensation in bed when I turned on my side. 5 days ago I was given stemitil from the doctor , it has made me feel worse so im going back the docs this afternoon to say im  coming off them. Im beginning to think now it maybe the menopause as I first thought. Has anyone else suffered, I also have hayfever at this time of year , tree pollen but was advised to come off the piriton with the medication he gave me .  :'(

Look up a condition called BPPV, benign proximal positional vertigo. I have had it off and on for 28 years. My bouts last from a few days to several weeks.

Watergypsy, I agree with Maryjane - it sounds like benign proximal positional.  I've had it myself, and was misdiagnosed for several months until I saw an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist.  They referred me to a physical therapist who performed the Epley Maneuver on me and it worked!  I did a few exercises at home afterward, but I haven't had vertigo since (about a year ago).

It might be worth talking to your GP about this.

Or it could be labyrinthitis which affects different people in different ways.

I had it! It wasn't bppv or labyrinthitis or menieres - it was peri! It is not a common symptom but it is a symptom of menopause and it gets a bit frustrating when everybody immediately assumes bppv etc....

I wouldn't say bppv except that Watergypsy said it happened when she turns on her side -- which is "classic" for bppv.

It's worth checking out since there can be a fairly easy fix for it that doesn't include drugs :)

Sorry to sound a bit moody but I was fobbed off for over a year with chronic vertigo as first labyrinthitis, then bppv then menieres! The ent specialist said apart from the vertigo I didn't fit any of these and yes it got worse when I turned over in bed! Mine was solved completely by adding in progesterone! It makes me soooo mad when it is not recognized as a symptom of menopause as,I was confined to my house for close to a year from this - even now when my progesterone fluctuates I get severe dizzyness. A homeopathic supplement I used with good effect was vertigoheel - worth a try!

omg..... I had that vertigo feeling- in the middle of Asda of all places!

I was just at the end of the green tablets on Elleste Duet 1mg    (don't think progesterone agrees with me ???)

But now today - back on the white tabs, I feel FINE!     (still haven't had any bleeding though) when will that happen?  ???

Bl..dy menopause sucks.

Just as estrogen has side effects, progesterone does too! Taking for only 2 weeks with fluctuating levels gave me dizzy symptoms, especially when ending! Now that I take every day I have no bad side effects except calmness. Don't assume progesterone doesn't agree with you when it is more likely fluctuating levels which are causing you problems! It is however, bloody awful - I would have it for 10 days straight where I couldn't leave the house - every month! Once I was put on progesterone I stopped having it

Thanks for all your imput, I went back and saw different doc this time a lady and she did some movement tests and comfirmed I have bppv. The tablets the other doc gave me (stemitil) she said sisnt want me take whole months worth so I got my self off them in a week. I was just starting to pick up but had a dizzy night last night but it was so humid here, and the farmer was in the field last two days cutting and turning so im just thinking of it as a just a one off and im going get over it. I sure im having this because I  the menopause heightens things, my other half thinks same , he tells me im doing well so Im lucky . Its not nice for any of us so good luck to everyone x

I have had BPPV for quite a few years now, I have had the Epley Manoeuvre a few times but it had crept back

http://www.patient.co.uk/health/benign-paroxysmal-positional-vertigo-leaflet

 http://www.dizzytimes.com/forum.php

For some it does go away completely sometimes on its own but mostly its something you get use to living with, the main thing is that it is benign and not health threatening, but can make you feel pretty awful and all over the place.

BBPV can affect people of all ages, both men and women even children, my eyes are affected ( nystagmus) if my head is in a certain position which brings on the strange dizzy feeling. For me it comes and goes mainly if I turn over in bed.
