Had Enough of Patches
« on: May 18, 2014, 04:09:58 PM »

I've tired Evoril Sequi and Evoril Conti and the bleeding is just horrendous on both.
I've been on the patches since last August so I think I've given it enough time to work.

I've really had enough now so have asked my doctor if I can have a hysterectomy.
No quality of life as things are at the moment.
I never know when the bleeding will start.
I've had heavy bleeding 2 out of the last 3 weeks.
Wearing light coloured clothing is defiantly a no no.
I'm off to Portugal in 3 weeks and I know if I'm anything like I have been this last 10 days, I'll be spending 2 weeks in a hotel room  :-\

So fed up with it all I could cry  :'(

Hi Lizzie. Sounds like you are having a miserable time.  How old are you and when did you last have a scan of your womb to check for fibroids which can give bleeding problems?

Before you consider hysterectomy you may like to think about an endometrial ablation which will get rid of the surface of the womb but you wont have to have it removed.

Lizzie - Sorry it's so horrid at the moment.

Like Taz says, perhaps think about a less serious procedure than a hysterectomy initially?

Hi Lizzie I have had 5 weeks none stop bleeding with everol Conti after being period free for 2 years. I have got so fed up with it all that I have been to see a private consultant who specialises in menopause. I am going to have a hysteroscopy on Tuesday and have a Mirena coil fitted at the same time. He said the mirena should sort out the bleeding and provide low dose progesterone.  I will use a oestrogen only patch with it. I am going on holiday to Malta in a couple of weeks so hoping I will be sorted for then. Hysterectomy seems quite drastic. Maybe the mirena coil or balloon ablation will be a better option for you?

ann - you may find that the Mirena initially gives you bleeding but this should settle down within six months. Some women don't get bleeding at all. It may take a while to get used to the progesterone too so don't be worried if you feel a bit more irritable or fed up. Fingers crossed it will be the start of a period free life!

The consultant said it is a lower dose than the everol conti so less side effects? He did say I may get a little bleeding in the first few months but hopefully it would stop altogether.

Fingers crossed - you can only try it and see how it goes ann.  It's a much kinder progesterone than the one in Evorel as well.

Thanks for the replies ladies.

I'm 54 and until I started using the patches I hadn't had a bleed for about a year.
I did have a fibroid removed about 2 1/2 years ago when I was still getting regular heavy periods.
That stopped them being very heavy for a while but then back to the usual mess each month.

The doctor did mention trying HRT pills instead of the patches. Does anybody use these and do you get the same side effects?

Thanks again, have a good day all of you   :sunny:

Could it be that you have developed more fibroids? HRT can cause these to grow which might be the reason why you are bleeding? I would suggest you ask your doc to refer you for a scan just to see what your womb lining is looking like and then decide on the next step from there.

I'm not sure whether pills would make much difference. I had constant bleeding on both conti patches and pills - some women do - but I would have thought the sequi HRT would only have given you bleeding for up to a week once a month rather than all the time.

I don't think pills would be any different and my consultant said they would cause more side effects as they go through your system. He suggested the Mirena coil and I am going to give that a try as I really don't want any bleeding after being 2 years free and then constant bleed on conti. I am expecting a little bleeding to start with but really hope this option will work for me. I have it fitted tomorrow so will keep you posted :)

Thanks again for your prompt replies.

I've got a letter for the hospital to arrange a scan, just need to get it there.
I'm not too keen on taking the pills as it's something else actually going in your body and being filtered by the liver.

Ann58, Good Luck for tomorrow.

That was my consultants opinion too Lizzie, that is why he is fiitting the coil as the progesterone goes straight to the place it is needed.
