I am not alone anymore
« on: May 06, 2014, 06:30:12 PM »

Hello everyone, I have spent a couple of days reading through your posts while I've been waiting for my 'authentication' to come through, and already I don't feel quite so alone.

I'm 53 and suppose I am post meno (3 years without a period?) and feeling pretty rubbish with not much support, particularly from my GP who knows nothing about meno. I have had awful flushes and sweats for at least 3 years and am now also suffering with dry crawling skin, hair loss, starting VA. I still work full time with busy home life and am at my wits end.

I had 9 months on Evorel sequi and it worked brilliantly but I started to get migraine with aura which according to my consultant is a contraindication for stroke and told me and my GP that I had to come off it. I've been suffering ever since. I'm really interested to know if anyone knows anything about this. I've read some posts on here and elsewhere that this is not the case and that it's a question of experimenting with dosage, type etc. I'd love to go back on it of I can.

Look forward to getting to know you all
Thanks
Cal

Hello Cal27 and welcome to the forum.
You will get a lot of information and support from this site and I'm sure an expert will be along shortly.

I just wanted to say that when I recently changed my HRT my GP was ready to prescribe a combination that I knew I didn't want to try and had it not been for the information from the ladies on MM I would have been prescribed the wrong thing entirely. I was even able to help him identify the right hormone from the list on his laptop (I suppose I should be forgiving and point out that he is newly qualified and probably out of his depth at the moment. I'll have to see how I get on with him in the future...).

Here's to all of us getting what we want :).
Take care.

Hello - I was taken off the pill over a year ago, because I have migraine with aura.

This is because the guidance changed in 2007 and the combined pill is now contraindicated if you have ever had a migraine with aura (it always was if you read the instruction leaflets, but there appears to have been a study then which said that the stroke risk was increased- which it always was  ::))

I was a bit miffed at the time, because I only had one year left where I could take it, and had taken it for 29 years without problems.

As far as I am aware, that only applies to the oral combined contraceptive pill. I have only ever seen info on using a more even method of delivery, such as patch. However, I am off to the doctor on Monday to ask about full HRT, so I will find out.

By the way, I cannot remember my last migraine and I have only had the aura on its own since my teens.

Hi Cal27

 :welcomemm: from me too.

There's another thread about migraine and being asked to come off HRT where I posted earlier this evening, along with others
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,24523.msg373822.html#msg373822

Do the migraines occur at a particular point in the cycle or unrelated? If so then it could be due to the progestogen, or withdrawing from it. I can understand the doctor's caution - you would not want to risk your long term health, but it might be worth asking your consultant if you could try changing the type eg to a lower dose patch with separate progestogen?

I did get migraines on Evorel ( from the norethisterone) but they were the classic type not with aura and in my case the doctor didn't seem worried as I had started getting them peri-menopausally when I was pre-menstrual ( although had not been to the doctor with them).

Sorry that probably isn't much help is it?

Thank you all for your replies - it really helped me last night when I read them x.

I saw my GP today (lucky cancellation with the one GP who at least listens) she thinks its too much of a risk to put me back on HRT  :( even though I haven't had aura for over six months, but she did say she would look into it and also try to find me a menopause specialist or support group. I need to do something... this morning I couldn't even focus enough to write a letter to my daughters tutor, let alone hold down a responsible job, and the tears are just on automatic at the moment..all hormonal (or lack off) I know - so reluctantly I think I need to start thinking about alternatives....
I'll keep you posted.
Thanks
