UTROGESTAN
« on: April 05, 2014, 06:30:40 AM »

Hi Ladies
Finally I have been prescribed Utrogestan! Hopefully it will work better for me that the Norethisterone. My GP has suggested I use it for 12 days a month and see how I go with a view to moving it to 2 monthsly if I get side effects.
I am interested to know how others use it and at what intervals and what experiences you have had on it?
Many thanks

My experiments have been varied over the last couple of years, but I think I have finally settled on a monthly routine of 100mg x 12 days x vag.

I have previously tried the 2 monthly routine with 200mg and the conti routine with 100mg x oral, but those weren't so success because I have a sensitivity to anything prog.

Hi shellb

Good news and hope it works for you.

I've been using it for two and a half years now - and I have only ever used it vaginally. Because of this I felt able to try a longer cycle so started with a two monthly cycle and then after some spotting last year thought I should reduce it - although I'm sure I didn't need to really. I reduced it to 6 weeks and now back up to seven.

My dose is 200 mg vaginally x 12 days in a 7 week cycle - ie so just over 5 weeks oestrogen only and then the 12 days with utrogestan, Even so it comes round very quickly!

The GP in our practice who specialises in all things gynae is happy for me to be on a two monthly cycle as I have so far uterus lining is healthy apart from v small fibroid.

I find it gradually builds up in my system so I become increasingly brain fogged and tired but nothing too major - sometimes get a migraine but as long as I keep off alcohol while on it then usually OK.

Hi Hurdity and Dana

Thanks for your replies. I finally collected my Utrogestan yesterday as I had to wait for it to come in stock. I have been told to take it monthly from day 15 through to day 26 of my cycle. The problem is that I am already on day 24 so I'm a bit stuck on what I should do. Have you any suggestions please?

Thank you

Hi shellb - didn't the doctor tell you when to start?

If you've already been on oestrogen only without progestogen I would start asap as the lining will already have built up for 24 days ( I can't remember what dose of oestrogen you are on?). If your natural cycle was sporadic anyway then the days of the cycle are artificial so I would start this (today) as your Day 15. I would take it for a couple of extra days this cycle if you can - just to make sure the xtra lining is shed - you may find it is a bit heavier because of the 24 days (oestrogen only) instead of 15. Take it at night!

Hope it goes well - I will be away from tomorrow for a while so won't be able to answer any Qs for a while but hopefully the other members of the Utrogestan gang can help you!

I too have tried different dosages etc and am currently on 100mg x 12 days per month used vaginally, works a treat! Are you on the 100mg or 200mg? I also use it from day 15 day through to day 26. As Hurdity says, I would just start from now and use it for 12 days, then you can always go back to using it on the 15th of next month.Good luck :)

Hi Hurdity and Cassie
The doctor told me to take it as soon as I got it bit I wasn't sure as I had gone over the 15 days, this is why I have asked for advice from you as I think you ladies are more experienced. I have 200mg tabs. Why should I take it at night? I also think a lower dose would suit me to start with then I could build up if needed? Can you cut these capsules in half? How do you use it vaginally and is it safe and what is the difference?
Many thanks

I take Utrogestan too. The 100mgs dose is more for women who take it for 25 days a month ( more or less continuously.) BUT there are some deviations from this- see what other people have said.

I am on 200mgs for 10-11 days every 4-6 weeks, whereas I was also allowed 100mgs for anywhere from 15-21 days but this hasn't suited me as I got bleeding at odd times. This is being prescribed privately and I would be able to access a scan if there were any problems.

The reason for taking it at night is that it can cause drowsiness and dizziness in some people- so not safe if you drive etc.
I don't think it would be wise to cut the capsules in half- the progesterone is in an oil suspension and it would be messy and quite hard to get the correct amount as you might spill some or not cut in exactly in half- you can get 100mg tablets but that's not what you've been prescribed.

The thing is, you won't always know if you need a higher dose- the dose helps control the amount of thickening of the lining, so unless you have a scan, or you have symptoms like odd bleeding which might indicate a thickened lining, the it's hard to know if you need more.

Others will be along with their experiences and advice.
