TAH BSO - Operation 9th April.
« on: April 06, 2014, 10:50:34 AM »

Hi Ladies, I went for my pre-op assessment on Friday.  (Not sure if it's okay to mention the hospital).  I felt much better after speaking to the Specialist Nurse, who answered my questions and I felt re-assured.  She was such a lovely warm person – very calming (which I needed).  As I mentioned in my previous post,
I have had my family, gone through horrendous PMDD, almost constant pelvic pain and backache, due to several fibroids pressing on my bladder.  I am feeling more positive about my op, but I have to think about whether to keep my cervix or not.  Has anyone had their cervix removed? What are the pros and cons – I would really appreciate some advice.

Thanks - Ichante x

Hi CLKD - Sorry I should have explained - brain not functioning well today. I was told that I would probably have a TAH  - Total Abdominal hysterectomy, where the womb and cervix are removed or I could have a Sub-total hysterectomy where the cervix is left.  The BSO - Bilateral Salpingo-oohrectomy , is when the Fallopian tubes and both ovaries are removed.

:thankyou: that's a lot of surgery to have to consider!  Hopefully someone will be along with experience, or maybe you could do a 'search'?

Hi ichante

Has your specialist/consultant spoken to you yet about the different options and the implications - I would have thought this should happen for such a major operation with decisions to make? Of course you can mention the hospital if you want to! You can say anything you like as long as you don't link to a commercial product!

Whaetever you decide I just want to wish you all the best for your operation as I shall be away on hols from Tues for a while. Hope it goes well and you have a good recovery!   :)

Hi Hurdity,

Thanks - I'm having my op at Queen Charlottes and Chelsea hospital in London.  I had a chance to visit the ward that I will be staying in and the team seem really nice.  I have an appointment with my gp tomorrow (after many changes in gp's) she is really supportive and always listens.  Hope you have a good holiday.

CLKD  - I will also ring the specialist nurse tomorrow - the more informed I am about the choice the better I'll feel.

Thank you all for your support - I'm feeling a lot calmer about things.

Let us know how you get on!  Make a list before you ring so that you talk about the important points!

Hi Ladies,
Thank  you all so much for the supportive words and sharing your experiences with me.  I couldn't get through to the specialist nurse yesterday, the line was engaged and to be truthful, I was somewhat impatient because I had so much telephoning around and organising things at home.  Plus my cat has been throwing up everyday for 5 days (which is very unusual for her) so I had to ring the vet for advice.

Anyway - I saw my gp  in the afternoon, she said, if the gynaecologist finds fibroids (i have many) in or near my cervix, then he will probably opt to take the cervix.  I am happy with that - and I feel more prepared to discuss this when I arrive tomorrow.

I am very re-assured by what I have read from ladies who have had their cervix removed, that they haven't had any problems and don't regret it.

It's strange because I feel quite calm today -(so far).

I am planning to stock up on peppermint and ginger for wind.
I have just become a member of the Hysterectomy Association - which provides loads of advice and resources.

Thank you ladies for you understanding and kind words.

Big Day tomorrow - Apprehensive but looking forward to the new stage in my life.

Love Ichante x

Have come late to this discussion.

I had my womb removed and kept my cervix, my surgeon left my ovaries but removed my fallopian tubes ( she told me that my ovaries would find their own blood supply and they they did)

Trust your surgeon to do the best for you ichante, they do want to their best for their patients.

I have never regretted having hysterectomy, one thing I do advise is to find out what your aftercare will be, that is important.

Keep calm and all will be well.

Thank you silverlady,

I think leading up to the surgery I was nervous. the ladies on this forum have been great and I appreciate all the advice I have been given.  I now feel more prepared and trust know that having a hysterectomy is the best thing for me.  After suffering so much for the past 8 years, I am letting go and trusting in the surgeon.
I will be back on here after my op and hopefully I can share my story and help others, as I have been helped by all you wonderful ladies.
Keep well.

Ichante.
