The mitochondria DNA is handed down from mother to daughter( the female line) through the ages
I am
1.9% Neanderthal, my ancient ancestors must have liked a little variety
0.6%% Denisova (they are still working on this branch
http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2013/07/125-missing-human-ancestor/shreeve-text
)
43% German
37% Greek
20% Southwest Asian
This explains to me my olive skin, fair hair and green eyes.
I am trying to get one of my brothers to test as males can test for both male and female lineage.
My Dads mum was Italian so that would be interesting too.
This is more interesting facts to add to my information on my Family Tree that I am planning to hand down to the Family.

Excuse my ignorance, but is that the one where they test a strand of hair?

No the kit consists of scraping cells from inner cheek with two tiny plastic scrapers provided which you seal in two small files with preserving liquid you then seal in a polythene bag and put in a package provided which is sent off to be analysed in America.

I have taken part in both Projects.

My brother has been compiling a family tree & has apparently sent off strands of hair. He knows we've definitely got Celtic connections. He must have spent a fortune trying to trace our ancestors. Will pass that onto him, though he may already have gone down that route.

MY OH is having a field day with his (little Neanderthal)
The Geno project 1 and 2 will give him all the info he needs, it is as much as the scientists knows at the present but it is ongoing and you are kept up-to-date, if you donate your DNA to the vaults as I have, as more is learned they will update your personal profile.
If you don't want your DNA kept, then they will destroy it.
