HRT- Patch or pill?
« on: January 16, 2014, 05:47:35 PM »

Hi everyone,

I'm not sure what to do!

I have been on the estrodiol 50 patch for the last 4 months and have found that my symptoms have not improved. My np has also prescribed celexa as an antidepressant for my mood swings, anxiety and the consant teariness I seem to have. The patch isn't helping me and my np keeps upping my antidepressant. She says it's not menopausal and I'm depressed. I don't think that is the case since this only started after my complete hysterectomy. I really want to get off the celexa because it's not helping either!

My question is, what have you ladies found to be the most effective form of HRT? How lost should it take to start to work?

Thanks everyone!

Everyone is different. However, maybe you need something stronger. Don't know anything about Celexa, but others on here might do.

Hi Karen, you didnt say what age you are which can make a difference as the younger you are the more estrogen you may need.  50 is quite a low dose especially after a total hyster.  Are you having any other symptoms such as sweats, flushes which could also indicate that you need more estrogen?

It can take a while to get sorted and if your GP is not helpful enough then asked to be referred to a menopause clinic.

Thanks for the replies Cubagirl and Sweettooth

I am 39 and had to have the complete hyster due to painful cysts on the ovaries that kept causing problems. I have had sweats and flashes and those have improved a bit with the patch but not completely. The emotional stuff hasn't improved at all!

My np hasn't been at all helpful or sympathetic. Apparently, "It's all in my head" and "dwelling on it will make it worse"! The dr's here don't deal with "woman's problems", only a nurse practitioner(female)I do have an appointment with a specialist in 3 months since that's the earliest I could get. I'm just looking for advice on what has helped others. I want to go in prepared with all the info I need. I know this isn't all in my head and I know it's not depression!!!

Thanks so much

Karen

Just an idea but why don't you email Dr Currie and ask her advice. It does not cost much and then you would have an expert opinion that's tailored to your symptoms. The more details you can give her the better.
Then you could print off her reply and have something positive to work on.

Hi I haven't been on here for a while but I was the same last November after a hysterectomy. Never took HRT before just had vitamins. As soon as I had the hysterectomy I was getting feelings I had never had before. I felt anxious, scared and one of my GP' s wanted to put me on antidepressants but refused as I had never had antidepressants in my life. I went and spoke to the Menopause Clinic and the doctor said it was the menopause. I am now using Estrogel alongside Vagifem and I am back to my normal self. I have been on it for nearly a year now and will continue for as long as it takes. Don't be bullied into antidepressants. I also take Vitamin B6 with Vitamin D. Hope you get the help as I thought I was going mad but realised after I just needed to put back what I had lost. Good Luck:)

Thank you ds54 I appreciate the advice! I'm glad you are feeling better and its good to know there is hope for me! I will make note of what you are on and mention it to my Dr.  I do take vitamin d, calcium and magnesium. I just wish drs weren't so quick to assume depression is the problem and throw drugs at us!

What is vagifem? I've heard of it but don't know anything about it!

Hi:) Vagifem is Hrt that you insert in vagina. It helps with dryness and helps with Vaginal Atrophy. I was getting throbbing and a very anxious feeling in that area too. My GP said that because of Hysterectomy that does happen. I use Vagifem and Estrogel everyday and I am so much better:) I was so scared because I didn't know what was happening to me. Now I am feeling much better. I sleep better and eat now where as before I didn't want to eat either. I found B6 has helped me a lot toxic Good Luck and don't be f :)obbed off with antidepressants unless you feel comfortable taking them. I done hormone test too. You can get it from Boots and its like a pregnancy test you dip it in your urine. It tells you if you are menopausal. I took that to my doctors tooxx Let me know how you get on:)
