Hi Bomber - yes it's a great article from earlier this year. Includes some vaulable information from Prof Studd and also from an endocrinologist about the overlap between menopausal and thyroid symptoms at this time - how one can mask the other.

Yes, that is a good article from one who has been there.

I  had my last period at 39 and 18 months later was diagnosed as hypothyroid.

Diagnosis was more complex as I was hyperthyroid first before going into hypothyroidism.

I will never know which was the chicken and which was the egg.

Thanks, that is a good article.

When I first experienced all the strange effects, I thought I was losing my mind.

May sound bitter I know, but I will be forever envious of those women who sail through it, with no change in the quality of life.

Not everyone will experience these symptoms — it depends how sensitive they are to oestrogen and progesterone.

Generally, those who have suffered from hormone-related problems, such as PMS or postnatal depression, are most affected, says Professor Studd.

There are cells called oestrogen receptors all over the body that are targets for oestrogen. As levels of the hormone fluctuate, the cells react and cause symptoms.

Interestingly, I did suffer with post natal depression with both children and even after a late miscarriage. I'm sure my doctor thinks I'm some mad hypochondriac as she insists that nausea is not a symptom of the peri menopause. My first major wave of nausea came when I missed my very first period at 47 which seems quite a coincidence. Unfortunately, telling me that the nausea is not connected has added considerably to the anxiety I'm feeling anyway. Forgot to mention that on top of a gastroscopy and swallowing manometry, I've also had a liver, pancreas and gall bladder scan plus blood tests and liver function tests. Like someone else said, I've been thinking I'm dying over the last few years.

Bomber, I was also referred for a huge amount of hospital tests 5 years ago including gastroscopy, endoscopy, liver and kidney scan, etc etc.  Fortunately my GP at the time realised that I then needed specialist advice from the meno clinic, as she admitted my symptoms were beyond her understanding.

Often GPs haven't got a clue re: meno.  Another female GP dismissed my symptoms as being menopausal.

Without a shadow of a doubt, in my experience, nausea is 100% connected to menopause.

In the early days when I first 'crashed' with estrogen loss, and was going out of my mind, I felt sick each and every day up until about 4pm.  I couldn't go out without knowing I had a plastic bag with me and went through every single OTC anti-sickness remedy.  I still have it now, on low dose HRT, but nowhere near as bad as it was.
