Anxiety - best meds for it?
« on: August 18, 2013, 06:42:36 PM »

Hi I have an appointment with me G.P. tomorrow, I've been putting it off but decided to make it to inquire about meds for anxiety. Do you think my G.P. would prescribe something for me to take? Also as there are are different meds for anxiety which would you ladies recommend?

It really all depends on how bad you are. You can use beta blockers and/or ask for CBT.

I have been given diazepam for emergency use only.

I also tried anti depressants but they made me very ill.

It's so difficult to manage anxiety and you have my sympathy. Hopefully your GP will be able to help.

He there
Really feel for you with the anxiety, it is the Bain of my life!!!
I take citalopram for it, it is used for anxiety and depression, I also have diazepam for emergencies but I find I don't really need it, the citalopram keeps me more even where as the diazepam is more of a short term thing.
Hope you get on ok with this, keep us posted.

:welcomemm:  I was given Valium for use on an 'as necessary' basis so took 5mg the evening before an Event, even visiting family was a big problem  :'(

Now I have a Beta-blocka: 40mg every night.  Rescue remedy can help too.

I'm sorry that you have anxiety.  How fast does your heart beat when you are anxious? Just ask as I wasn't allowed beta blockers as my heart rate is too slow.
I believe they are very effective when someone's having a classic anxiety attack with racing heart.
Good luck.

I never have a racing heart, not that I am aware of.  It's the sudden nausea, light headedness, the feeling of having to flee the situation  :-\ and when really bad, I shake for hours ........

I saw my doctor this morning and he prescribed a small dose of xanax for the short term but I am to go back in 2 weeks time to see how I'm getting and to discuss maybe an alternative to xanax.

Hi jeanneA , anxiety has to be the vilest menopause symptom - for me anyway. I have been taking an anti depressant since being on the menopause roller coaster, it's helped but I'm feeling its not as effective as it was. Last year it was a great help, don't know if it's effectiveness is wearing off. I have low dose vallium for emergencies which is effective. It seems to be trial and error in finding something that helps, you need a supportive GP. I've had a very busy few months so I may settle in a few weeks, if not i will be knocking on docs door again.

You will get lots of support from this forum, and it's really good to know you are not alone x

The effect of ADs can wear off.  Sometimes the brain becomes used to them.  Or the doseage needs to be upped for 3/4 months.

Thanks ladies for your support I do appreciate it.  I've taken xanax earlier and I believe it's helping already.  I have been suffering with heart palpations and since taking the .25 of xanax my palpations have stopped could be coincidence of course.
