lighter shorter bleeds
« on: July 10, 2013, 01:42:59 PM »

Hi everyone,

I have been taking Estradiol transdermally and Utrogestan vaginally for over 6 months now.  I notice my bleeds are shorter and lighter than previously.  I am 50 years old and per-menopausal.    Is it 'normal' to have shorter and lighter bleeds when on HRT?  I wonder if this may result in some thickening of the lining of the uterus?

Many thanks

Hi Meeka

I presume you are using them cylically?

When I started HRT I was having occasional periods and of course the HRT brought back a withdrawal bleed. However over the years as I got post-menopausal these got lighter and lighter and eventually I didn't get a withdrawal bleed at all. This is because there is not enough oestrogen to stimulate the womb-lining to build up and the progesterone was more than enough to prevent this as well.

How often do you use the Utrogestan and how much do you use? Ditto what dose patches?

It is highly unlikely to be due to build up of womb-lining as you might experience break-through bleeding if this were the case. If you are on the standard dose of 50 mcg oestrogen then this is not a high dose.

If you are worried go to the doc but personally I wouldn't be, and I wasn't when it happened to me!

Thanks Hurdity,

Before I started HRT my bleeds were quite regular, sometimes not so.  But my bleeds were quite heavy and lasted  7 days.

I know use two pumps of oestrogel daily continually, and seven days of 100mg Utrogestan vaginally for only 7 days which causes a light bleed two days after stopping the Utrogestan.   Guess I will have to ask the Doc if he thinks the lighter bleeds are OK.  I started using the Utrogestan vaginally after reading on hear about it.....I prefer it that way, I feel it is working more efficiently and I don't worry that I don't take it on an empty stomach.

Thanks again for the reply Hurdity.

Hi again Meeka

Just a quick reply before I go to bed...

I remember we discussed this didn't we last year I think when you first went on HRT or maybe in Feb?

Notwithstanding what I said re my situation and light bleeds, that is quite a low dose of prog to be using - even allowing for the fact that you might be able to halve the dose compared to oral Utrogestan. I still think the generally prescribed dose errs on the side of caution and many women need less to keep the lining thin, but I think maybe best to ask the doc to give you a scan possibly just to make absolutely sure? I mean I presume that dose (7 days of 100 mg) is under a specialist so they must be aware that you need to be extra vigilant re the lining?

If all is OK then you  can be re-assured that the low bleeds are normal for you going into post-meno and then not worry at all.
