3 monthly hrt
« on: July 09, 2013, 05:03:39 PM »

Hi Does anyone know if you can get 3 monthly hrt patches as I dont want to take pills. My doc gave me Evorel Conti and Ive bled all the time then found out it was for women who have stopped having periods mine are still there but all over the place. Not pleased with him to be honest.

Not quite sure what you mean Lynn.

First of all how old are you. Some doctors will give you a conti HRT but it can take up to six months to settle. Your other options are a sequi patch or an oestrogen patch and separate progesterone pill.

What do you mean by a three monthly HRT patch?

HI Thanks for replying. I started on Evorel Conti and have had 3 heavy bleeds in 4 months, I then looked up on the internet and it said its for older women who have stopped bleeding (im 52 and having periods every now and then and very heavy). I went to the docs and he recommended I go onto a cyclical type, either monthly or 3 monthly. As I dont want a monthly bleed i decided on the 3 monthly but this only seems to be in tablet form and I wanted patches as I take alot of meds for Ulcerative colitis and they affect the liver. I cant find a 3 monthly cylclical hrt in patch form only in tablets and wondered if there was one.

I don't think there is a cyclical patch lynn. You are right in that you should not have been prescribed a conti HRT and no wonder you got bleeding on them. You may find that a sequi patch, once it has settled down, will only give you light bleeds anyway. Mine used to last around four days. The first three months were heavier and also painful but after that they were easy to manage.

It's always worth reading the patient information leaflet with any medications we are given. I think it says on Evorel Conti that it is for post menopausal women.

It can be used at that age with no problems. If you remember Taz, Dr Currie herself posted that it was quite safe.

I do agree with Taz though that there are no long cycle HRT patches. Perhaps you should go back to your GP and discuss your options.

If you stick with the conti patch then it generally settles. It says to give it 6 months. I bled off and on for months on this patch and then it settled to no bleeds at all.

Thanks Taz, I wasnt very pleased with my gp when I found out the info myself, he has said find out which one you want to go on then let me know so I basically did his job for him and did the research myself. I really dont want a period every month Im worried its going to be heavy and painfull so have decided to opt for (Tridestra) I figured out Id rather cope with a period every 3 months. Hope Ive made the right decision, I didnt really want to take the pills but its either that or a montly bleed. I do have yearly blood tests for liver function due to my meds (mesalazine) which I take for ulcerative colitis. Im figuring if I take them at night I will absorb them better as I have a dodgy digestive system. I suppose its all trial and error, what a mine field. :-\

Dont know what to do now, dont know whether to go on Tridestra or continue on the Evorel Conti, I was bleeding really heavily every 2 to 3 weeks I ve never had blood clots like it and it frightened the life out of me.

Hi lynn

It's always difficult taking any form of HRT while you are still peri-menopausal and having some sort of cycle. This is because your own hormones are flucutating sometimes dramatically so this can override the HRT. Also you may well have had some heavy bleeding anyway as this can also happen while peri even without HRT.

One thing I would say about Tridestra or any 3 monthly HRT (especially while peri)- it means your womb lining will build up on the oestrogen only tablets so may well be extra heavy at the end of the 3 months, and you may well get breakthrough bleeding if your natural cycle begins to get more frequent than 3 months.

Unfortunately as the others have said there is no other officially licensed long cycle HRT. However several of us on here do use long cycle HRT with the consent of our specialist or GP. I am 60 and post-meno and have a two monthly cycle and some others are too.

I use Estradot patches and separate Progesterone micronised - called Utrogestan - which I use vaginally.  That is the only way you can have a longer cycle using patches.( ie separate oestrogen and progesterone)  In the circumstances ( your GP giving you the wrong product or at least without proper discussion) then maybe you could ask to be referred to a menopause clinic in your area if there is one, to discuss the options with someone who knows what they are doing!

Incidentally I understand from what some women have said, that long cycle HRT (ie 3 months) is not much in favour with the leading gynaes although I think 6 weeks - 2 months can be prescribed off licence (or done unoffocially as some of us are also doing...)

Hope this helps

It really is trial an error and many of us have tried quite a few before getting g one that suits.
I know that does not really help because if you are like me you will want things sorted yesterday.

I did not bleed heavily with the conti patch.
Why don't you try the sequi patch as Taz suggested. At least then you would know when you will get a period and it will be very light and easily managed compared to what you are having now.

Don't give up there are lots of options.

Hi A quick catch up I had a period about 3 weeks after starting Tridestra and carried on I had light bleeding 2 weeks before the end of the course which developed into a full blown period. It really did sort out the hot flushes as they have stopped, so thats a relief and I am sleeping alot better too. Im on my last 2 tablets and due to start the 3 months all over again. Must say over the last couple of weeks Ive had bad headaches too. Problem now is my gp cant get them and Ive been to two chemists and they cant get them either, they are saying they dont know when they will be able to get more stock so what do I do now? Im due to start taking them again on saturday.

Have the chemists phoned the manufacturers for you? This is something they will do if you ask and then you can find out when they will be back in stock and what the problem is. It may be worth phoning around all the pharmacies in your area to see if any have them in stock.

The manufacturers of Tridestra have stopped sending them out, the main boots in Peterborough say its a manufacturing problem and they cant get them, neither can all the other chemists I have rang. This seems to be the only 3 monthly HRT (or am I wrong). To cut a long story short Ive now asked the gp to leave me a prescription for Everol Sequi or Femseven Sequi (patches) as I am still having periods and under 54 hope Ive done the right thing. What a nuisance that I cant get the Tridestra its really annoying, I really do hate having periods I get such a bad headache and sore breasts now Im going to have to put up with that everymonth >:(
Does being on this monthly sequi make the blood flow lighter? Not looking forward to this every month.

I find it really bad that they have not put any information about this on their site. Surely they understand that consumers of their products have a right to know why one is unavailable? http://www.orionpharma.co.uk/

As for periods on sequi. After the initial couple of months mine evened out to last around three days a month with a light flow and no pain. I hope that you are the same.

Thanks Taz, maybe its not such a bad thing afterall that I couldnt get the Tridestra as for the week of placebos I have the worst headaches I think Ive ever had. I always did get what I call a period headache before I came on but this is awfull It just wont shift. Ive taken paracetamol 4 hourly and it doesnt touch it, am going to resort to some codeine tonight as it wont matter if Im zombiefied tomorrow as I will be on my own all day and can chill. Hoping now Ive started the Evorel Sequi that the headache stops.
