Was with my grandad last night and we always do the daily mail crossword together (his fav paper!) anyway we were stuck on the thurs crossword and no way of finding answer as he never got Fridays solution.

Clue is - 'yet' (4,3,4) J???, T?E, ? - any suggestions it's driving us insane! Xxx

OH does the daily crossword in the DM  he is out at the moment so can't ask him.

I have not a clue but I understand that crosswords have a pattern and style according to who thinks them up and each pattern of crosswords can be different.

Hi Ladies

I am a big crossword fan too and always do the DM coffee break one on the back of the paper.

I would really like to be able to do cryptic crosswords but do not understand a lot of the clues i.e. how you solve it from the clues - is there a knack and how do you start to learn it?  Are there any books that would help you?

Any ideas?

How interesting Mrs P - I wondered if perhaps you really had to be with someone who could explain to you how they arrive at the answer and then you would have an idea.

I would love to be able to do them, though, they are more challenging then the normal crossword.

Maybe others will come along to offer their ideas too.

Mrs  P I am good at languages but at the time I could not see it, but it was obvious once you could see how how it works.

I think I will have a go at the cryptic crossword now.. its certainly gives the brain a work out.

I always do the Daily Express crossword - not the cryptic one because I just can't understand the clues (even though I am reasonably good at languages) and the 2 in the Sunday Express. I cannot leave them alone until I have solved every clue - quite an obsession really.

I also like the ones where you have to add letters to a list of words to make longer words. Oh and those word puzzles in the Express where you have to make two 5 letter words out of 9 letters (the words share one of the letters) I just can't think what it's called.

Along with Cryptic, I also cannot do Sudoku. Don't know why - I was never any good at maths - maybe that's why.

Hmm, yes I did realise it wasn't really maths but maybe its just because they are numbers and not letters that phases me. Well, I don't know what it is but something prevents me from solving them   

Now, give me some Latin vocab tests or translations and I'm away!

Got this from my brother this week - taken from a Guardian xword.

"Dog breed; one with no penguins, we hear" (6)

The first part of the clue tells you what you are looking for, and the second part is a further sub-clue.

If a clue says something about hearing, it normally means that the answer sounds like.....

The answer to this (forgive me) is Shitzu. Think about it!
