Effectiveness of Oestrogel v tablets
« on: October 23, 2011, 04:44:07 PM »

Has anyone tried oestrogel and gone back to tablets?

Was discussing with a colleague that I would like to try oestrogel but she said when she took the standard dose (1.5mg oestriol) she found her hot flushes were breaking through again, so rather than up the dosage she reverted to 1mg tablets and the problem was resolved.

Is this why the minimum and maximum doses for gel are higher than in tablets?

I'm confused - I would have thought you'd need less transdermally if its faster acting.

Not aufait with the product, however sometimes the amounts are different dependant on how they are prepared.  The quickest way to get medication into the system is rectally  ;)

Very true CLKD thats what my Pharmacist told me, he said he could make up a lot of drugs this way but in UK its not a popular route.

Hi Rivadan

I tried Oestrogel - or was it another type of gel I had - Sandrena?  Anyway, it came in a sachet and I think was equivalent to a 50mcg patch.

My opinion - Found it hard to understand the "area" it was meant to be spread upon and made me feel as though I'd had too much....

Part of the problem for me was that I tried it during Peri-meno and it was just too high a dose of Estrogen at the time but of course I didn't understand that back then!

I've definitely found the "stand alone" Estrogen patches with a separate progesterone easier for me :)  But finding a GP who will willingly prescribe this combination will not be easy.....

I understand your confusion Susan.  I may be faced with the same decision soon - pill, patch or gel to go with the Mirena coil.

I was of the mind that the gel may be easier to control and quicker rather than go back to the doctor and change the pill dosage or patch dosage.  By adding or removing one of the pump measures you could tweak it?

Like Val M I was a little unsure exactly where it should be applied.

I think I was less concerned about strength of ingredients.  I assumed they could differ just by method of delivery - although was not sure exactly how they would differ and tt felt more important to me to find a patch or gel with quantity to suit rather than take a pill.

Well, my thinking made sense to me anyway  ;)

My friend has been on HRT since 17 when she had cancer and everything removed.  She has had the implant which is no longer made in the UK and has just moved onto the gel, recommended by the gynaecologists.  She has not had any problems so far.

Sammiejane - Wow this is an ANCIENT thread from 8 years ago! Also if a member's name is in black it means they are no longer a member and can't reply. Just thought I would tell you this to save you posting and wondering why you're not getting a reply! Hopefully you will get replies from other threads you've posted on but do make sure the last post on the thread was fairly recent and then currently active members will see it?
